World class sport stackers Kit Fox and Alison Zick were invited to the ESPN studio in New York City in late October to demonstrate their sport stacking acumen on Cold Pizza, a morning sports show on ESPN2.

Sport stacking was a hit with co-host Jay Crawford. “It’s among the most amazing things I’ve seen in a long time,” he said.

Teen Newsweek picks up on sport stacking

On the heels of the October 3, 2005 issue of Newsweek, which featured sport stacking in “The Tip Sheet,” there is another article in the October 17, 2005 issue of Teen Newsweek.

Titled “Stacking Up” the article refers to sport stacking as the “latest hot game” and includes tips on the 3-3-3 and 3-6-3. This publication reaches more than 250,000 teenagers in schools across the country.

Emily Fox takes on sports reporter in Minneapolis

World sport stacking record holder Emily Fox thought she headed to Minnesota to play basketball, but her sport stacking skills have also generated a lot of interest.

Sports reporter Eric Perkins from the NBC affiliate KARE-TV, featured Emily in a story where he tried his best (but with little success) to match her stacking prowess in a popular segment called “Perk’s Play.”

On the basketball court, Emily is off to a positive start playing for the University of Minnesota. The Minnesota Star-Tribune featured the freshman on the front page of its November 14th sports page after her strong showing in the Gopher’s second exhibition game noting Emily’s “flying ponytail and flashy open-court game.”

Delaware teacher stacks up sky high

Physical educator Garrett Lydic was recently named Delaware Teacher of the Year, and sport stacking was one reason why. Lydic teaches physical education at North Laurel Elementary, and according to a recent newspaper article, he is known for reaching out to students of all abilities.

He holds jump-rope and sport stacking clubs during his planning periods. "Students who aren't gifted athletes still find something they can be good at in my class," he said. "I believe in the potential of each and every one." Congratulations Garrett!

World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) produces training video
The number of local, district and state sport stacking tournaments continues to increase under the guidance of the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA).

The non-profit WSSA is the official governing body for sport stacking and has added a valuable tool to its library of resources.

A training video for sport stacking judges has just been released and offers a definitive course in sport stacking rules, regulations and tournament protocol.

“The Judges Training Presentation” is available on DVD. Visit the WSSA web site for more information.

Though Speed Stacks, Inc. has been the leading sponsor and provider of sport stacking equipment to the World Sport Stacking Association since the WSSA’s inception in 2001, the official endorsement of Speed Stacks products has just recently been formalized. Every cup in new sets of Speed Stacks will bear the stamp “Official Cup of the WSSA.” No other brand carries this designation. In addition, the StackMat Competition Timer will continue to be the official timing device of the WSSA. This patented stacking surface and timer are used in all WSSA sanctioned tournaments.

Speaking of official timing devices, the new, improved Speed Stacks Tournament Display is looking sleeker and functioning more efficiently.

The November/December issue of American Fitness devotes a two-page spread to the world of sport stacking. Titled ‘The World of Cups: An Unusual Sport Stacks Up,” the article provides some historical background on sport stacking then focuses on the 2005 World Sport Stacking Championships. American Fitness is published bimonthly by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). Why did the AFAA want to include an article about sport stacking? As author Ann Ring put it, “Sport stacking exercises both the body and brain, and individualized assessment allows everyone to succeed. The sport also improves ambidexterity, as well as physical and mental concentration.” We at Speed Stacks sure like to see sport stacking placed with other articles on exercise, healthy eating, strength training and Pilates.

Hockey players at the University of Wisconsin are sharpening more than their skates. They’re also gaining an edge on improved hand-eye coordination with sport stacking, thanks to a group of students from Madison-area Royal Oaks Elementary School. After seeing sport stacking at a Royal Oaks fitness fair, Badger Head Coach Mike Eaves invited a group of fourth- and fifth-graders to give a sport stacking lesson to his hockey team. According to player A.J. Degenhardt, the team now keeps a few sets of Speed Stacks and a StackMat in the locker room. The players stack to help get them focused before practice or a game. Fastest times are written on a board. “It is fun,” he said, adding that sport stacking is “definitely good for hand-eye coordination.” Royal Oakes PE Teacher Brad Lutes said teaching the hockey team was “a tremendous experience for our young students and Coach Eaves and his players were extremely classy and gracious hosts. My students are still talking about how cool it was to be in the Badger Locker room.”

"In the last e-STACK, I mentioned being on national TV. Here’s a glimpse of what it was all about. After I won the 2005 World Championships in the Cycle Stack, I was asked to come to the Maryland State Championships where a crew from “Inside Edition” would be filming.

I flew into Washington, D.C., and got to see the Washington Memorial, the Capitol Building, the White House and Smithsonian Museum. The next day I went to the Maryland State Championships. First, I helped judge the preliminary rounds for some of the stackers. Then “Inside Edition” interviewed me for 30 minutes.

After the interview, they asked me to “stack until I got it perfect.” In just a couple tries, I got an 8.36 in the cycle. Then during the competition they brought me to a table to try to beat Emily Fox’s overall world record of 7.43 seconds. I did OK, but couldn't’t get below 9 seconds on my three attempts.

At the end of the day, I got to hand out awards to the kids who won.

A few weeks later when the story aired nationally on “Inside Edition,” I learned that TV can be weird. They do a lot of editing. Even though I was interviewed for 30 minutes and Matt Reed from Speed Stacks was interviewed for 30 more minutes, none of our comments were shown. Still, they did show me stacking for about five seconds and mentioned my name as world champ—so that was cool. The whole story on “Inside Edition” was about two minutes long but the camera crew was there for more than five hours!

On my most recent trip, I traveled to Nova Scotia to demonstrate at a Health & Physical Education. conference. Nova Scotia was pretty awesome. We visited a giant pumpkin farm where one pumpkin was 998 pounds! We also went to the pond where hockey was created, called Long Pond.

It’s cool to rack up those frequent flier miles and spread the word about sport stacking. Stack Fast! Until next time. . ."
