Speed Stacks joins Club Pride in the spirit of giving...

Sport stacking kudos go out to these students from Country Heights Elementary School in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Called Club Pride, this group of warm-hearted fifth-graders adopted West Wortham K-8 School in Saucier, Mississippi. Part of their mission: to share sport stacking with the West Wortham students affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The photo was taken after news was delivered that Speed Stacks would be donating a 30-set Sport Pack for Club Pride to pass on to their adopted school.

Sport stacking recognized by the "Underdog Nation"

Everyone loves an underdog, but author Joshua Davis has taken it to an extreme.

The self-professed underdog makes a living out of entering “the most grueling and unusual contests in the world.” Sport stacking appeared on his radar and he makes mention of it in his recent book The Underdog.

His website is called a “launchpad into the world’s most obscure and outlandish competitions” and features a section on sport stacking, terming Emily Fox the Venus Williams of the sport.

A sampling of other sports making it on the Underdog Nation list includes: sumo wrestling, airplane aerobics, ostrich racing and underwater shot put.

Behind-the-scenes work for the 2006 World Sport Stacking Championships is in full swing in preparation for this year’s big event on April 8th. Once again the all-day championship tournament will be held at the Denver Coliseum. Last year, nearly 1,000 stackers competed representing the United States and five foreign countries. Mark your calendar! Expectations for this year’s tournament are even higher as the profile of sport stacking continues to grow around the world. Registration packets will be available beginning the week of February 13th. Go to the World Sport Stacking web site for more information.

You guessed it, sport stacking with Speed Stacks is high on the list and received three and a half pages of coverage. In fact, the author Charmain Sutherland wrote a personal note to Bob Fox, president and founder of Speed Stacks, thanking him for what he has done in the field of physical education. “Kids love Speed Stacks and sport stacking,” she said. According to Sutherland, sport stacking with Speed Stacks and the other activities included in her book: 1) meet National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) standards, 2) use equipment effectively and efficiently in tight spaces, 3) overcome space limitations, giving children a safe environment in which to learn and grow; and 4) minimize time and budget demands.

Does sport stacking deserve a place in physical education curricula? The answer is “yes,” according to Teaching Elementary Physical Education (TEPE), a bimonthly magazine published by Human Kinetics, Inc. Sport stacking with Speed Stacks received several pages of ink, beginning with an editorial by Steve Stork, followed by an article by Dr. Brian Udermann and concluding with sport stacking activity suggestions contributed by four physical educators. According to Stork, TEPE senior editor, the advantages of sport stacking warrant giving it a try in a school setting. Udermann expands on his previous research study that confirmed the improvement of reaction time and hand-eye coordination through sport stacking. He points out the increasing popularity of sport stacking and the excitement and enthusiasm being generated. His conclusion: sport stacking “has the potential to serve a valuable purpose in physical education curricula.” Turn the page and you’ll find an article titled Getting a Little More from Your Speed Stacks, which offers a variety of activities from “Push-Up Stack” to “Scooter Scuttle Stack” to “6 up, 6 Down Relay”. A good source for PE teachers looking for active stacking ideas for grades 1-8. (The Speed Stacks "On the Move Activity Guide" is also jam packed with great, active sport stacking ideas.) This publication is one more indication of increased visibility and acceptance of sport stacking in a school setting. Obviously, we at Speed Stacks are pleased to see this kind of affirmation.

Hi, everyone! My name is Ashlee Ginn and I’m one of the newest members on the International Speed Stacks Demonstration Team. I want to tell you about the exciting life of sport stacking and why I love it so much.

I am 11 years old and in the 6th grade at The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. I was first introduced to cup stacking (that’s what it was called in the beginning) by my PE teacher, Mrs. Bissell, in 1st grade. In 2nd grade, my parents bought me my first set of cups and I joined the after-school, cup stacking club. I loved learning the routines and trying to improve my time. I was excited when the leaders told us that the Regional Cup Stacking Championship Tournament was going to be held right here in our city at the United States Air Force Academy. I practiced even more so that I could compete in the tournament in the spring of 2002. Since this was my first cup stacking tournament, I just went to have fun and experience what a tournament was like. When they announced my team placed fourth in the 3-6-3 Relay, I couldn’t believe my ears! I was so excited I wanted to hug my cups!

So much has changed since then. Now, I have a StackMat that has helped me improve my time immensely. In fact, my cups move so fast, my hands can’t keep up! Even the name has changed from “cup stacking” to “sport stacking” to better reflect the competitiveness of this activity. Also, the sport has spread to countries outside of North America. I went to my first WORLD Sport Stacking Tournament in the spring of 2005 at the Denver Coliseum. Although I didn’t win anything, I had a TON of fun. I had the privilege of meeting Emily Fox, world record holder, and I got to see my friend, Nate Florea, win the tournament. I had a cool time talking with kids from other countries, too. It was all very exciting! If you are a sport stacker and haven’t been to a tournament yet, I encourage you to go.

Next month, I will travel to Tennessee to demonstrate sport stacking to PE teachers at a state-wide conference. I’ll tell you all about it when I return!

Until next time….Stack Fast!!!"
