Never Too Young or Too Old - July, 2005

"While attending a Speed Stacks session at a workshop, I remember thinking I could never teach Stacking as I have arthritic hands, and my Elementary students would be just too young to understand the many aspects of proper stacking. Nothing could have been farther when what I later found out.

Not only was I able to stack, but for at least a week I was the fastest stacker on the school campus, what pride I felt. However it was not long before my grade 5 students were out stacking me and loving every minute. We also reflected on how stacks could be used outside to the gymnasium setting and discussed using them at recess centers, Math centers, Art and Academically Gifted classrooms. I introduced Stacking to grades 2 though 4 with the same results as grade 5, and this year I plan to include grade 1 students.

We use Stacking as part of our Physical Education curriculum for warm-ups, manipulative centers, recess and Math Centers, and for earned reward time. We will be using Stacking for part of our Field Day activities, although I have to keep reminding the parent volunteers to included the students when stacking! We are currently adding Speed Stacks to our list of available Clubs, looking forward to inviting another school for a friendly challenge.

Speed Stacks added another exciting dimension to our Year Round Curriculum, and I will never stop being amazed at every new idea the students create to use Stacks. I have been teaching for over 30 years and Speed Stacks are one of the few innovations that have really proven their worth."
