  A Teacher's Story - June, 2005

"When I first found out I would be "teaching" stacking during our summer adventures program, I was a little apprehensive. I had heard of this activity, but I didn't know how I was going to work with 28 kids 3 times a day. The kids came in very excited about the class and told me they knew everything about cup stacking.

I informed them that we would be watching the training video and working together to learn proper technique, including myself. They were so anxious to learn and have fun. By the end of the first day, I was actually pretty good ... not as good as the kids so that was my new challenge. Each day we watched a little more of the video and became faster. We worked on technique and speed. We had great relays in the hallway.

Our principal was even impressed at how engaged every student was with the races. All of the students had great sportsmanship every time. One of our favorite relays was king/queen of the table. Every student, regardless of their athletic ability was able to shine with this event. We ended our 12 days together with a final speed round. We had one student who completed the 3-6-3 in 5.03 seconds, and the best cycle time was 10.83. WOW!

I was truly impressed with this activity. Each student improved on their stacking technique and speed. I, too, improved and the students wanted to race me as well.

I plan to work with our P.E. teacher next year and have a  Stacking club after school. This was a great positive experience for all of our summer adventure students, as well as, for myself. Thanks for developing such a fun sport!"
