"I am the Physical Education teacher at Nash Elementary School in the North Penn School District, located in Harleysville, PA, and we do lots of fun and exciting activities with our Speed Stacks. Throughout the 03-04 school year, I taught all of my kindergarten through sixth grade students how to stack the different combinations. I also have the students stack while doing push ups and curl ups. There are times during warm ups that we spread all of the cups out on the floor in groups of 3 and the students line up around the gym and they up stack and down stack as many sets as they can in one minute. We do this activity a couple of times and the students try and beat their score each time. Another game is called “Builders and Bulldozers”. Half the class up stacks (builders) and the other half down stacks (bulldozers) at the same time. The students then switch rolls. The students have also used the cups as a teambuilding activity and have built a pyramid all by themselves. If a student is not able to take class, they can work on their stacking. This past schoolyear on our Olympic Day, held on May 28th, the students used the Speed Stacks in the traditional relay formation. Finally, for teaching purposes I have used the cups in the classroom for days when I am not able to teach in the gym. During the ’03-’04 school year and again this year our school used Speed Stacks as a lunchroom behavior incentive. The correlate team that I am on came up with an incentive program to help with the lunchroom behavior. At the end of each month the correlate chooses a different prize for the class with the most certificates and that class receives a prize. We are once again offering the SportPack of Speed Stacks a couple of times during the school year. The class that wins arranges a time with me to take the Speed Stacks and do stacking at their leisure. I had a stacking club after school last year during March and April for grades one through six. This year the club will be for grades three through six. The Physical Education teachers in our district are holding our first annual stacking tournament on April 7, 2005, at North Penn High School. Finally, I am taking twelve students with me to Venture Into Fitness night on Tuesday, October 12, 2004, from 5PM-8PM at North Penn High School to demonstrate and teach the community about stacking. Last year the Physical Education department won a grant and this evening is to show the community how Physical Education has evolved throughout the years. As you can tell our school does a great deal with our Speed Stacks and the students absolutely enjoy it. I have been able to reach students of all different abilities and help make them feel successful, which in turn, has helped with their self esteem." |
