| Don't Bee a Slacker, Bee a Buder Cup Stacker - December, 2004 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
"I am Mr. Anderson a Physical Education teacher, and I’m reporting from Buder Elementary School home of the “Bobcats” in the Ritenour School District, located in St. Louis County, St. Louis Missouri. Where our motto is: DON’T BEE A SLACKER... BEE A BUDER CUP STACKER I have been teaching P.E. for six years, four as an APE and two at Buder. I was lucky enough to watch Bob Fox at a conference in Florida. The great thing was, he was giving away stacks of cups and a video. Last year I took those cups and the video to a “Buder Parent Teacher Organization” (BPTO) and presented stacking to the parents. Less than a week later I had a 30-count sport pack. My personal story is a very touching one to me, I had been teaching stacking for about two months during school time and as an after school program. I had a student named “Mark” he was a third grader at the time, not the biggest, the fastest, or even the most athletic student in his grade. He was a bit smaller than most of his classmates. “Mark” had been coming to the after school program since it started, never missed a day, he even bought his own cups and timer mat. On this particular day it was raining outside, the students had to stay inside for lunch recess, I’m the duty teacher at this time. From a distance I saw “Mark” walk into the gym carrying his cups clipped on to his hip. As “Mark” approached, I ask him if he would like to have a “Stack Off” (that is where two people stacked head to head, usually the best 3 out of 5). What happened next, was the most incredible thing I have ever seen in my all my years of teaching. “Mark” pulled out his cups placed them 3-6-3 on the table, as I started to get out my cups and placed them on the table the entire third grade class surrounded the table. As another student said “On your mark, get set, GO,” “Mark” started stacking, I started stacking and in less than 20 seconds the first round was over, the room was filled with silence, you could hear a pin drop. Then all of a sudden you heard from the back of the room a chant started “Mark”, “Mark”, “Mark”, “Mark”, the entire gym was chanting for “Mark” for he had just beaten Mr. Anderson. “Mark” went on to beat me 3-0 on that day. I thought his classmates were going to carry him out of the gym. “Mark” had become a stacking Icon at Buder, the news traveled fast throughout the school that “Mark” had beaten Mr. Anderson. Now, I have students beat me all the time. As for “Mark” he is in fourth grade now, and I still haven’t been able to beat him since that rainy day. I’m also wanting to report on is the success of our stacking program, last year was the first time most of my students had ever seen stacking, but once they saw Emily Fox on the video they were ready to stack like a group of hungry “Bobcats.” The news traveled quickly throughout the community and parents wanted to know how to get cups for there children at home. So we put together a group order of over $700.00 the first time. This year we have put together a group order of almost doubling the first. We are now in the process of getting all the elementary schools in our district turned on to Speed Stacks. Hopefully we will be reporting on a tournament soon." |
