"Hillcrest Elementary is Wild about Sport Stacking" - January, 2006

"Hi, my name is Tim Alwine. I teach physical education at Hillcrest Elementary School. Last year I introduced our students to Sports Stacking. I started with 4 sets and used them in a station. When I saw the reaction of the students, I approached our principal and parent organization about getting a class pack of 25. We got our class pack and did a 3 week unit on Sports Stacking. We had different types of relays and individual contests that the students really enjoyed. In each class I also picked out 2-4 students that could stack well to help others. These were my assistant coaches. I even had several 5th grade students come in and help with the 1st and 2nd grade classes.

I wanted to show our parent group how much the students were learning and how much fun they had. I talked to the parent group and at one of the monthly meetings I had about 12 students demonstrate Sports Stacking. After the demonstration, everyone attending the meeting got their own stacks and the students taught the adults and other children there how to stack. It was a very fun night.

To highlight the evening a kindergarten boy who got a set of stacks and stack mat for Christmas demonstrated the Cycle. He did it in 38 seconds. The parents were really blown away. The interest grew and we were able to have students order their own stacks. On warm days students will bring in their own stacks at recess to use. Sport Stacking Rules!!!"
